Career as an Assembler and Fabricator - Job Description, Employment, and Salary

Assemblers and fabricators join parts of the products like computers, motor vehicles, airplanes, automobiles. These jobs fall under low skills category. There are many colleges offering the course. However, you should try to study in a university that can provide you with as much practical knowledge as possible.

Job Profile

There is no specific job profile for these jobs. It varies from company to company. An example is given in the following paragraph.

Some work on the assembly line. When the product passes their workstation on the conveyor belt, they do their particular task. If he has been given the task of placing nut on the bolt, when the product passes his work station, he does the task. Another assembler work may vary like tightening the nut. Like this so many employees will be there along the assembly line. Based on the skill level, there are three types of assemblers.

Floor assemblers : These workers work with heavy equipment and large machinery. They use power tools like soldering, power drills. They fasten the nuts, screws, and rivets. They usually join large products such as cranes, airplanes and industrial machinery.

Bench assemblers : They work on more specific task. They often make subassemblies like steering columns for automobiles, electronic circuits for stereo. Sometimes they assemble entire product like rifles, hearing aid. They also test the product after assembling.

Precision assemblers : They do more skilled work. They work on different subassemblies and may finally take part in final assembly of complex products like missiles. They may even work with engineers and technicians in developing new product.

How to Become an Assembler

There are few requirements for the applying for the post of Assembler. You can search for the job on the internet, or in the weekly government gazette. You can also check for such jobs in the daily classifieds of newspapers. You can opt for a full time or a part time job as an assembler. The basic requirement is a basic school diploma. But preference is given to people who know how to handle associated equipments, such as the soldering machine and electronic testers etc.

Further Prospects

Assemblers and fabricators can move further in their job by acquiring skills and experience. They can become supervisors, repairers or inspectors. But the opportunities of growth are very strong. Most of the companies are outsourcing this process to other countries. This is beneficial for both the companies. While the company that outsource saves money, the company in the other country gets good client.

Develop required communication skills and technical skills. You can advance further. Employees can directly apply to the manufacturing companies. They can also use the classified advertisements in tabloids and yellow pages. Sometimes they can even walk in directly.
